When we started Ignite FC, we started with a clean slate. What do parents and players hate about the current travel soccer and youth sports culture? As you can imagine, that list was long. But at the top of that list:
Tryouts
For years, the traditional tryout process in travel soccer has been a source of stress for players and families. But at Ignite FC, we saw an opportunity to do better. We believed the process of evaluating players should reflect our club’s core values: development, inclusivity, and a true understanding of each athlete’s potential. That’s why, last year, we introduced Open Training.
Instead of a one-day tryout, Open Training allows players to participate in multiple training sessions alongside our current teams. This gives coaches the chance to see athletes in a more natural environment—over time, in real game scenarios, and within a team dynamic. More importantly, it gives players and parents the opportunity to experience Ignite FC, to see if our club culture and coaching philosophy are the right fit for them.
When we launched Open Training in our inaugural season, we knew it was a step in the right direction. What has been very cool to us, is that we are seeing a lot of local clubs make a similar change to their tryout process. And you know what? We love it.
Ignite FC was never about doing things the way they’ve always been done. We want to be leaders in the soccer community, pushing for a culture that prioritizes player development over rushed evaluations. Seeing others adopt this model only reinforces that we’re making a difference.
For players, Open Training eliminates the pressure of performing. No bib, no number. For parents, it provides a transparent way to assess whether Ignite FC is the right fit for their child. And for coaches, it means making more informed roster decisions based on a holistic understanding of each player’s skill set, work ethic, and personality.
As we continue to challenge the conventional wisdoms of the travel soccer culture, our goal remains the same: to create an environment where young athletes can thrive, develop, and love the game.
